They look like a glamband but sound more like HIM spiced up with the 70s. Certainly a crude simplifying, but describing NEGATIVE’s sounds in such a few words is more difficult than one’d think.
- I actually don’t like the way they label us, but as long as they spell our name right it’s all right, the singer Jonne Aaron says. We’re like a Greek salad: you find both tomatoes, cucumbers and a little bit of everything in it. I don’t hear so much glam in our sound, but we’re trying to do like QUEEN and mix in different sorts of music. In the end we’re just a rock band – a melancholic, melodic rock band.

There’s a saying that “it has taken NEGATIVE several years to break through in one night”. They founded in Tampere with Jonne and the drummer Jay Slammer in 1997 and debuted only in 2003 – but from then on things also happened faster. The single ‘The Moment of Our Love’ and the album ‘War of Love’ experienced great success and the following albums, ‘Sweet and Deceitful’ (2004) and ‘Anorectic’ (2006) were both in the charts, and none of the band’s eleven singles have been lower than #4 in the charts. The fact that the twelfth single ‘Won’t Let Go’ (which could be heard in an acoustic version on TV4’s ‘Nyhetsmorgon’ [new’s morning] April 21st) and the new album ‘Karma Killer’ both went straight to #1, is no estimation but practically a formality.

But Finland is small and the world is big, Jonne states. So now is the time to aim for a serious international success, in which the guitarist Sir Christus was fired earlier this year.
- It was a difficult decision; he had been with us for seven years. But he was heading towards doom and even took heroin. When we went to China he was so high that he got lost at the airport and was gone for eleven hours! We told him to tighten up, but sorry… it’s like ice hockey; you must function as a team. And the responsibility grows with the sales – it’s not like in the 70s and 80s, if you fail, there’s always some other band ready to take your place. Of course, everybody in the band has their problems; Larry’s doing drugs and we drink a lot. But we’re keeping it under control and I have been dreaming of this since I founded NEGATIVE as 14-year-old. I don’t want us to be known as the band which was ‘so close to get success’.

About the music itself, the singer has the following to say,
- ‘Anorectic’ was a big step forwards, much tougher and more aggressive than the previous records. On ‘Karma Killer’ we’re uniting all these elements – we wanted to keep the unified whole simple but also keep all the moods, from hot-temperedness and melancholy. Larry (Love) recorded all guitars with Marshall amplifiers – Christus usually used Vox – and I think we’ve got closer to the NEGATIVE sound, we’ve been looking for, than ever before. A lot of PINK FLOYD influences; it’s what we always calmed down with after the show during the long ‘Anorectic’-tour; PINK FLOYD, LED ZEPPELIN AND AEROSMITH. If ‘Anorectic’ is ‘Use Your Illusion’, then ‘Karma Killer’ is our ‘Best of’!

After this GUNS N’ ROSES analogy Jonne finishes off with the hope that the SRF-audience will receive NEGATIVE, himself, Jay, Larry, the bassist Antti Anatomy, the keyboardist Mr. Snack and the new guitarist Gary – with an open mind.

bei aller liebe - jeder weiß dass kris probleme hat - schön und gut - aber das jonne in jedem verdammten interview damit kommt und dann alles noch so rausplaudert - da bekomm ich echt nen hals!!!!
